On Thursday 22 June, students from Castle Rushen visited the Stock Exchange in Paternoster Square, London. They were invited to turn on the Stock Exchange at 08:00 and watch the opening sequence. They then had a Business breakfast with the Marcus Stuttard from the London Stock Exchange, Gavin Oldham & Richard Stone from The Share Centre, and David Buik from Panmure Gordon. After breakfast the students were invited to a series of talks from other leading figures from financial institutions in the city.

The visit came about as a result of Castle Rushen High School being the National winners of the annual Shares for School competition. In October the team started off with £1500, and over the course of eight months, through as series of investments in the UK Stock Market, managed to turn this into £1818.13; a 21.2% return on their investment. Castle Rushen has an outstanding reputation in this competition, having won the North West regional competition 3 times and the National competition twice.

After the winners day ceremony the students visited the offices of Schroders to learn about their business operations, and what it was like to work in finance in the city of London.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and there were numerous comments about how impressive our students were. Several of the leading professionals that we met asked our students to stay in touch with then about their future careers and opportunities for work experience.
